Job Description:
Past Recovery Archaeological Services Inc. is seeking an experienced and meticulous Project Archaeologist to join our team. As a leading archaeological consulting firm, we are dedicated to preserving and uncovering our rich cultural heritage. This role requires a combination of field leadership, technical report writing and client management. As fieldwork may occur throughout the province, applicants from across the province are encouraged to apply, however those located in Eastern Ontario and able to commute to our Perth office on a regular basis will be given preference.
Responsibilities:
- Direct and oversee Stage 1-4 archaeological assessments and mitigations using field techniques and recording methods suitable for the site type and conditions.
- Ensure all fieldwork complies with the Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists and associated Technical Bulletins issued by the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism (MCM), with guidance from Senior staff.
- Supervise and mentor a team of archaeological field technicians, delegating tasks and giving opportunities to learn when appropriate.
- Ensure quality control of field work and data – including maintaining organized field notes, records and documentation of all activities.
- Maintain communication with and provide regular updates to Project Managers and Coordinators.
- Assist in the identification, documentation and interpretation of archaeological sites and artifacts.
- Proficient with field equipment, such as GPS and digital mapping tools for accurate data collection.
- Manage field schedules to ensure successful completion of a project.
- Adhere to health and safety regulations and protocols during fieldwork.
- Contributing to and authoring archaeological reports.
- Work collaboratively with the Indigenous Community members, Field Directors and other team members.
Qualifications:
- Valid Professional Licence issued by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism. Candidates with a Research Licence, a Master’s degree in Archaeology/Anthropology and extensive experience may be considered.
- Previous experience as a Project Archaeologist or an Archaeological Field Director is preferred. Proven experience working in Ontario on a variety of site types, including rural, urban and multicomponent is an asset.
- Thorough understanding of MCM reporting requirements and their relevance to archaeological field work.
- Strong attention to detail and communication skills.
- Leadership skills and the ability to motivate a team.
- Physical fitness and endurance for outdoor fieldwork (ex. Hand shoveling, screening soils, walking long distances, lifting up to 40 lbs) in varying weather and conditions.
- Valid Driver’s license (minimum Class ‘G’ or equivalent) and access to reliable transportation.
- Willingness to work on projects across the province. This position will require travel and overnight stays, with accommodations and per diems provided.
- Experience in GIS and Microsoft Suite (Teams, One Note, Word, Excel, SharePoint) would be an asset.

Salary: $34.00 to $40.00 per hour to start, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
